Facilities
The layout of the school
The British School has two air-conditioned buildings; one for the Primary and one for the Secondary School. In July 2006, the Primary School moved out of the main building to a refurbished neighbouring building which is connected to the main campus providing more space for both schools. The Secondary School is situated in the main campus together with the Nursery School (for 3-4 year olds).
The main campus
Spread across six acres, the main campus is set around beautiful manicured gardens and playing fields including a football field, cricket pitch, athletics tracks and tennis courts. It is home to the secondary classrooms; a library; specialist rooms for Music, Art, Drama and ICT; four newly-equipped science laboratories; facilities for learning support, language support and the Secondary Counsellor; a large multi-purpose auditorium; an amphitheatre; fully-equipped health room; nursery; common room for Year 13 students; cafeteria, snack and tuck shops; uniform and stationery shops as well as the administrative offices.
The Primary School
Until the new school building is ready, our temporary building provides a compact school with a bright, lively and welcoming atmosphere. There are 16 classrooms catering for class group sizes of either 14 or 22 students. In addition, there are specialist rooms for Music, ICT, PE and Dance together with a fully equipped health room, library and facilities for Learning Support, Language Support and the Primary Counsellor. The library is well stocked and students have easy access to multimedia and the internet.
While the Primary School makes active use of the auditorium and playing fields in the main campus for games and assemblies, it also has its own play area complete with an adventure playground for the younger students. There is also a common open air cafeteria shared by both the Primary and Secondary wings.
The Secondary School
The Secondary School provides students with a supportive yet challenging learning environment. It has air-conditioned classrooms which have recently been refurbished with new furniture and tutorial rooms for general teaching. The extensive use of ActivBoards (Interactive Promethean Boards) enables teachers to skilfully incorporate ICT into classroom teaching.
The school has well-equipped specialty rooms for Science, Art, Music, Drama and Computers as well as four Science Laboratories (including one specifically dedicated to IB students) which have also been recently refurbished to meet the latest international standards.
The Secondary School facilities also include:
The multi-purpose auditorium hosts assemblies, drama productions, parent evenings and indoor sports.
Two computer rooms allow every student a terminal during classes and enable online learning across the curriculum. The entire school campus is fully wi fi to allow for easy access to information by students and staff.
Mobile laptop carts are available for in-class usage both for writing assignments and for accessing information.
The art rooms are a creative hub and provide space for a wide range of activities including drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, textile printing and design.
Two drama studios complete with theatre lights, sound equipment and versatile floor space give drama students ample opportunity for exploration.
Music is an important activity and impromptu student concerts are held in the outdoor amphitheatre while lessons are held in the specialist soundproofed Music Room.
The library houses a large collection of books, reference texts, magazines and journals, as well as laptops for in-library use. We have an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) system, which provides easy computerised access to library resources. A section of the library is reserved for IB Diploma students to work during and after school hours.
Sports facilities include playing fields for cricket, football, track and field athletics, handball, netball and softball. In addition, there are courts for basketball, tennis and badminton.
Year 13 students have exclusive access to a spacious common room equipped with workstations, a sitting area and a coffee machine. It is a multi-purpose space which can be used for work and leisure.
The new build
The development of the campus over the next three years will bring the students some superb facilities:
*Design Technology Workshops will enable this subject to be introduced to the curriculum;
*a Sports Centre, swimming pool and gymnasium will enhance the sports facilities for the whole school;
*a new Arts Centre will enrich the theatre, drama, dance and performance provision.
*state-of the-art classrooms in a fully wireless environment will host classes of 22 students, with an average teaching adult to student ratio across the school of about 1:9;
*the IB Centre will provide a study base and seminar facilities for 200 IB students, 100 per cohort;
*the Nursery will be a purpose-built facility for 60 3-4 year olds; and
*the primary school will be housed for the first time in a purpose-built facility with break-out learning areas for
each year group.
The school will grow in enrolments gradually, in a managed way, culminating in a school of around 1350 students. We will have 4 classes of 22 students in each year group, from Reception to Year 11, and then 100 students in each of the IB years. This remains a small school, about 645 in the primary and the same in the secondary, plus a 60 place Nursery setting. We have designed the school to meet the needs of our students and an enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. This emphasises flexibility, critical thinking, problem-solving and practical investigations. Our architectural partners, morphogenesis, have an outstanding track record in providing environmentally-sustainable buildings. The British School is aiming for a gold standard GRIHA rating and aims to be a model of best practice in teaching and learning, environmental management and in educational innovation, whilst retaining its existing focus on high standards, challenge and inclusivity. We wish to couple these characteristics with a facility as good as any in international schooling.
