Application Process
The British School is an independent, not-for-profit, international school providing the finest of British and international education for 3-18 year olds. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS). We offer high quality education based on the National Curriculum of England, IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme. The students, who are from over 55 nationalities, graduate to leading universities/colleges world-wide.
The British School has a constitutional link with The British High Commission. The High Commissioner is President of The British School Society and all parents are members. Parents are very involved in the life of the school and its governance.
Before we explain the admissions process in detail, please note:
1. Registrations can be done through e-mail or in person. Registrations for the year 2013-2014 started from 1 November 2012.
2. Registrations being done in person can be done from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 1 pm.
3. Internationally mobile families will be in a position to apply for admissions into the school throughout the year.
4. We endeavour to keep students of the same age in the same year group, where possible. While your child may be in a different class or grade in their current school, we will always refer to our admissions policy when deciding which class they should attend in The British School, New Delhi. Please request for the age versus class guide.
Primary School students range from age 3+ (Nursery class) to age 10+ in Year 6. Secondary School has students of age group 11+ in Year 7 to age 17+ in Year 13.
5. Admission is dependent upon:
- On a place being available in the year group in for which admission has been applied for.
- The ability of applicants to demonstrate that they can complement the international character of the school’s student population and
benefit from the education provided by The British School.
This is evaluated by the school through an assessment process which involves:
a. a written evaluation;
b. a face to face interview and
c. reports (academic and all other relevant reports depending on the year group and the programme applied for) from the previous school (where applicable).
6. Year 11 and Year 13 are not entry points for any student unless they are coming from the same examinations system, and have the capability of joining the programme part way through, providing we are able to offer the same or similar subject choices. Year 11 is the final year of the IGCSE course (comprising Years 10 & 11) and Year 13 is the final year of the IB Diploma Programme(comprising Years 12 & 13).
If you are already in Delhi or considering a visit to the city, please feel free to make an appointment to meet the admissions team by calling 011-4066 4166 or writing to admissions@british-school.org. We will be happy to meet you and answer all your queries.
The Admission Process
Step 1: Registration
The first step in the application process is to register with us on the waiting list. Registration forms can be downloaded from the download section of this website. For registering your child, please submit the following to the Admissions office through e-mail, courier or in person.
• Previous school reports (last three years where applicable)
• Photocopy of the child's passport
• Photocopy of the parents' passport
• Passport sized photograph of the child (colour)
• Registration Fee: Rs.60,000/- as a cheque or a banker’s cheque (favouring "The British School Society")
As stated in the revised Admissions Policy of The British School approved by the Board of Governors, the following is applicable to all potential admissions with effect from the academic year 2012-13.
A total Registration Fee of Rs.60,000/- is to be paid. This includes:
• cost of Registration (Rs. 10,000/-) which is non-refundable and does not guarantee admission; and
• the Registration charge: Rs.50,000/- which does not guarantee admission.
Please note that the Registration charge:
• will be adjusted against the first term tuition fee when the applicant accepts the offer of admission from the
school and enrols; and
• is fully refundable for all families who have not been given an offer of admission and are withdrawing their
application from the waiting list on or before 10th of August of the academic year for which the application
for admissions was made.
The ‘Registration charge’ will be forfeited (will become non-refundable) if:
a). For any reason, the family does not accept the offer of admission.
b). The family does not request, in writing, to the admissions office, the withdrawal from the waiting list on or before 10 August of the academic year for which the application for admissions was made.
The payment of the ‘Registration charge’ enables the application to be valid for the duration of the child’s school age, i.e. till the time the applicant turns 17 years.
Step 2: Written Assessment
Once we have seats to offer, all applicants (except for Nursery and Reception) must undergo an admissions test, which consists of a simple age-appropriate oral and written question and answer session with a member of the teaching staff. This helps us to know about each applicant’s capabilities and identify any special needs. Admission assessments are necessary for all students entering Year 1 to Year 10, in which a minimum percentage of marks must be obtained in both English and Mathematics. On the basis of successful assessment results and seat availability, admission will be offered.
a). All assessments may take place either in The British School in Delhi, or in the student's current school, with the approval and supervision of an invigilator. We will require the name, phone number and e-mail contact details of the teacher with whom we will liaise regarding assessment to be supervised in other schools.
b). Year 10 applicants must take a General Science paper, in addition to the Mathematics and English paper.
c). All students for Year 12 (IB) will be required to take entrance examinations in English Language, Mathematics and one other subject that they intend taking at the higher level in the IB Diploma.
Step 3: Face to Face interview
Applicants who clear the written assessments will be invited for a face to face interview with Admissions panel comprising of a representative of the principal of the primary/secondary school plus a teacher/Key Stage Coordinator or the Curriculum Area Leader, and will include the prospective student and at least one parent of the student concerned.
a. students must provide at least three years previous school reports (beginning with the most recent); and
b. examination students (Year 10 to Year 13) must keep us informed of any "mock" IGCSE / IB results.
It is recognised that in the case of applicants applying from overseas, it will normally not be possible to schedule a meeting until the physical arrival of the families in Delhi. Sometimes, a video-conference / skype call may be arranged. In situations where none of this is a possibility, the Admissions Panel may grant a conditional admission based on the applicant’s written assessment (if applicable) and previous school records. Such conditional approval will be subject to confirmation following the interview, which should be scheduled as soon as reasonably possible.
Additionally, applicants to the IB Diploma programme (Year 12 and Year 13) please note:
- An applicant’s choice of her/his IB Diploma subjects will be determined by the above process, and, in the case of certain higher level subjects, minimum grades are required.
- An assessment is usually necessary for transfer students. It is important to provide us with most recent school reports to determine if an admissions assessment is necessary.
- Reference checks and previous school records will be scrutinised prior to admitting students transferring from previous schools.
Step 4: Offer of admission
The result of the written tests, face to face interviews and previous three years records from the previous school (where applicable) of the applicant, will be considered before an offer of admission is made by The British School. This encompasses behavioural and attitudinal matters as well as the academic record before an offer of admission is made.
- For every successful admission, a homeschool agreement will be signed to signify acceptance of the behavioural and attitudinal
standards expected at the school.
- An offer of a place needs to be accepted or rejected within ten working days.
- Fees will be paid upon acceptance of the place.
- Fees for students residing in India are to be paid within five working days of the date of the invoice.
- Fees for students residing abroad are to be paid within ten working days of the date of invoicing.
Invoices will be sent by e-mail to promote efficiency of payment.
The school reserves the right to offer the place to the next available candidate, if
a). The offer is not accepted within ten working days of the offer made.
b). Payment is not made within the specified period of time.
