The Linguistics Area

The Language and Literature curriculum area comprises the departments of English, Modern Languages and Self–Taught. The Curriculum area aims to foster in our learners an appreciation of the importance of language as a way of knowing, understanding and interacting with their world. Besides preparing learners for their academic qualifications at the end of the school year, the curriculum aims to fulfill the school’s mission through a variety of teaching strategies and a rich multi-cultural choice of languages and texts.

English is a compulsory subject and is taught through from Nursery to IB. We are guided by the British National Framework for key stages 1 to 3. At the GCSE level we offer Literature [English], English as a First Language, and English as a Second Language .At the IB level, English is offered as a Language A1, as well as Language B/A2.

The modern languages on offer are Hindi, French, German and Spanish. These are offered at varying levels in different classes. The details of languages on offer for a year group are available with the admissions office. In addition, a student may choose to take up their first language as a self- taught subject of study. The school is committed to the development of its multi lingual environment.

The department’s strength lies in its well qualified and dedicated staff that is committed to the development of the learner through linguistic competence.

The Human & Social Area

The Human & Social Area encompasses five subjects namely History, Geography, Business Management, Economics & Psychology. While History & Geography are offered from Key Stage 3 onwards, Business & Economics are introduced at Key Stage 4 and Psychology as an IB subject. The Department aims to help develop compassionate and fair-minded persons who can make positive contributions to society as individuals and as members of groups. What is desired are individuals whose actions reflect an educated, rational and empathetic sense of social responsibility. The needs of both the special needs and gifted learner are kept in mind during course delivery at all levels. Both curriculum continuity and cross curricular linkages also manifest themselves in the teaching of the curriculum in all five subject areas. Higher order thinking skills are developed using a variety of instructional and assessment strategies.

Mathematics and Computing Studies Curriculum Area

The Curriculum Area strives to provide pupils with an interactive approach to learning within a stimulating and structured environment.  Learners are supported in developing, building and consolidating skills which can be transferred and applied   to different contexts , both in the classroom and beyond.  Teaching across the Key stages is interspersed with investigations and tasks which nurture and enhance critical thinking skills. 

 In the curriculum area, at Key Stage 3 pupils follow learning objectives of the British National Curriculum.  In Mathematics, pupils follow the IGCSE syllabus (Extended/Core) at Key Stage 4, and  the IGCSE  Paper 0420 in Computer Studies.  At Key Stage 5, for the IB Diploma,  both Mathematics and Computer Science are offered at various levels.

Scientific Area

Science is offered as a compulsory subject at Key Stage 3.The curriculum is broadly based on the National Curriculum Of England and the programme has been enriched by consciously incorporating the development of skills.All the sciences Physics, Chemistry ,Biology and Environmental Management are taught at the IGCSE level.We follow the CIE IGCSE programme.

At the IB level, we offer all the three sciences at both the Higher level and the Standard level .as well as Environmental Systems and Society.

The Science curriculum at all levels aims to provide well designed studies of experimental and practical science, a worthwile educational experience for all students so that they become confident citizens in a technological world.

We strive to stimulate interest in, and care for, the environment and promote an awareness that the study and practice of science are subject to social , economic , technological, ethical and cultural influences and limitations.

The department has well qualified and enthusiastic teachers who are committed to raising standards of teaching and learning.

Aesthetic & Performing Arts, PE & Sport

 

Arts

The Art Department at The British School has an excellent reputation for providing a lively and varied art education  in Key Stage 3 that helps the growth of the creative potential of every student as well as fully understanding the language of art through critical and analytical methods. Through the framework of the National Curriculum for Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design, we offer the students a rich variety of medium and techniques to encourage and develop the students aesthetic sensibilities, abilities to identify, research and evaluate creative problems to reach imaginative and original solutions. The IB Visual Art program develops  excellent growth and a strong relationship between research and artistic production through the command of topics/concepts. It encourages a highly developed understanding of socio cultural and historical perspectives in more than one cultural context using critical analysis with exploration of ideas, in order to create meaningful and creative studio works displaying excellent technical ability.

 

Music

 The secondary school music program at the British school gives students the opportunity to explore music from a variety of perspectives and experiences.

Students will examine music from all over the world ranging from Reggae to Indian Classical music or from Baroque music to Western Popular with many other styles in-between. Students are also encouraged to explore varying styles of performance, composition and music theory and push them selves to develop their skills and musical interest further. 

            The school also offers a wide a varied range of instrumental workshops for students to take part in after school as well as holding and taking part in numerous concerts and events throughout the school year, examples of this from last year include

·        The 3 stages carnival

·        The Can Kids battle of the bands

·        The IB valediction evening

 

Physical Education

The British School has designed a comprehensive Physical Education programme to provide a supportive environment where students can understand the value of physical activity and its contribution to a healthy life style. The students are given the opportunity to work towards developing competency in a variety of physical activities through participation in indoor and outdoor sports, aerobics and rhythmic exercises, Yoga and in inter-house and inter-school tournaments. Content units are designed to enhance fitness levels and enable students to expand their knowledge about rules, strategies and sportsmanship. Cooperation and peer support are emphasized throughout the semester to build positive social interaction. Our goal for each student is to develop personal lifetime fitness habits that are associated with current health concepts on the wellness continuum.

The health and wellness lessons consist of interrelated subjects that support positive choices and skills necessary to achieve and maintain a healthy life style. Students have access to a large scale of sports activities which take place beyond school hours and on weekends regularly.

 

Drama
The Drama department at The British School plays an exciting and integral role in the development of all students. We offer a varied and culturally rich curriculum throughout Key Stage three that provides the students with challenging and creative lessons. Ranging from Mask work to Melodrama students explore and discover the elements of theatre;  building their confidence, self-esteem and interpersonal skills that will enhance their educational experience.
 At Key Stage 4 we offer IGCSE, a two year course where there is opportunity to explore in more detail text work and group projects, encompassing the elements of creating theatre. Students perform throughout the two year course and through explorative strategies and research, develop strong performance skills.
 IB Theatre Arts is offered at Key Stage 5 and we have enjoyed successful results. The course encourages students to make strong links between research, experience and knowledge. The level of study prepares the student for further education in the Arts and develops the ‘practitioner’ in them.
 The school has strong links with ISTA and the school recently hosted the ISTA festival which brought practitioners and students from around the world to celebrate and explore Theatre.
