Thank you for showing interest in The British School, New Delhi.
If you are new to Delhi and/or new to the school or soon to join the school, may I extend a particularly warm welcome.
We pride ourselves on our ability to capitalise on the international body of students in our care, and in helping them,
irrespective of their ability, to achieve their full potential. The IB Diploma results this year (2010) are a best ever,
with an average points score amongst the Diploma students of 33 points. In 2009, the last published results, 100% of our
students achieved at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE/IGCSE. The school is now in its sixth year of offering the IB programme.
Almost all subjects attain an average points score above the world average. We are proud of our Nursery and primary provision
and the fact that we use standardised assessments helps us to monitor the students progress and intervene early, as required.
Students with mild – moderate learning difficulties, a s well as those for whom English is an additional language to their
mother tongue are welcomed to the school. We welcome any student who may benefit from the programmes we offer and, in the case
of older students, has shown the appropriate attitude and behavioral standards in their school career to be an asset to the community.
The school is over-subscribed and has waiting lists for most age groups. Priority is given to siblings of existing students and then British,
overseas and Indian passport holders. The cosmopolitan mix is something we treasure.
There has been considerable research carried out on what students expect from their school.
In general, I believe, that students want to be safe, they want to be valued and they wish to know they are achieving. By safe, we mean
not only secure but also that they are able to work in an environment in which they are not penalised for taking risks or for making mistakes,
that there is an absence of bullying and that, in a multicultural environment, that all perspectives are valued, irrespective of whether or
not they agree with one’s own perspective.
At The British School, we take parents views seriously and seek them frequently. The culture is an
open one, and, being a small school of 650+ students, we are an interconnected community where everyone is well known.
The
distinctive features and selling points of the
school are:
-
our
multiculturalism. About 60 nationalities of
student are usually represented, including about
30% from the diplomatic community;
-
our
warmth and vibrancy, making a strong sense of
community;
-
our
continuous focus on school improvement and on
personalising each student’s learning;
-
our
links with Britain, through the British High
Commission and through the National Curriculum of
England;
-
our
Indian soul. We are proud of the way we bring the
cultures and values of the Indian democratic
society to the school. Largely, we have an Indian
staff, supplemented by overseas nationals bringing
different experiences to the students;
-
our
academic performance, from the Nursery, through
the primary to IGCSE and the IB Diploma. Last
year, 87% of the students were successful in
achieving places at one of their top two chosen
universities;
-
our
teaching adult to student ration of about 1:6;
-
the
broad, enquiry-based curriculum we offer,
including at IGCSE and the IB Diploma; and
-
our
values of inclusivity, of developing students’
leadership abilities and our inter-cultural
tolerance.
We are a
heavily over-subscribed school but will always
welcome your expressions of interest, in any
capacity.
