I would like to thank the entire school for creating the wonderful school environment that has so enriched my childrens' way of thinking and their attitude towards life and learning. Their three years spent at The British School has strengthened their foundations in all aspects of the curriculum and has also given them the environment to grow in a multi-cultural diversity that can truly contribute to making them global citizens.
Director's Welcome
Thank you very much for your interest in The British School. We are delighted that you are interested in us and I want to take the opportunity to share with you some of the distinctive characteristics of this school. I want to begin with the ethos of the school because this describes how we do things and how the school ‘feels’ for all those in the community, and, most importantly, the students.
• First, the school is a multi-national and multi-cultural community. We are a community in which we promote tolerance, mutual respect and valuing the views of others, even when different, or rather particularly when different from one’s own.
• We promote international-mindedness because we believe in its inherent value in developing citizens that are open to thinking globally.
• The school is privileged in many ways. It is our obligation, in a city surrounded by needs and in a country with big gaps between material wealth and poverty to promote community service and local action.
• We are not authoritarian by nature. It is important for young people to know what is right and what is wrong, but self-discipline is more sustainable than imposed discipline.
• We promote high standards of achievement. In whatever we do, our goal is to maximise each student’s potential and allow her/him to flourish. We are as proud of our academic achievements with the youngest nursery and primary students as we are of our excellent results in the IGCSE and the IB Diploma.
• By offering the National Curriculum for England to the end of Year 9, and through our professional links with the UK, we enable international transfers to the UK and to other schools to be smooth ones. However, we serve a global community and we support internationally-mobile families to make a smooth transition to any type of school system. Our students graduate to universities world-wide, but predominantly to the UK and the United States.
• Our staff is largely Indian, with about 10% being from overseas. All staff has the opportunity to be part of a professional community world-wide since we believe in investing in the human resources and in their continual potential for development.
• It is important for us to recognise that we are in India. The ‘Indian soul’ of the school goes well beyond festivals and food in that it permeates all that we do.
• Our school is governed by a democratically elected Board, drawn largely from the parent community. We are a not-for-profit school. All financial surpluses are reinvested in the education of today’s and tomorrow’s generations of students.
• We are also heavily over-subscribed. Admissions are made in accordance with the Board’s approved policy which is summarised on this site.
